  6.   The Little Foxes is the season's most tense and biting drama
  7. -- as tense and biting as was Playwright Lillian Hellman's The
  8. Children's Hour. From the Song of Solomon comes the title: "Take
  9. us the foxes, the little foxes, that spoil the vines..." Study
  10. of a rapacious Southern family on the make at the turn of the
  11. century. The Little Foxes catches the Hubbards -- who by sharp
  12. bargaining and hard ways have achieved small town prosperity --
  13. on the point of becoming heel-grinding, big-time industrialists.

  15.   Oscar Hubbard (Carl Benton Reid) is mean, tight-lipped,
  16. greedy, his brother Ben (Charles Dingle) shrewder, more capable,
  17. more sardonic; their sister Regina (Tallulah Bankhead) grandly
  18. and coldly ambitious for wealth, power, position. The trio's
  19. business schemes require the financial help of Regina's dying
  20. husband; and, sick of their vulpine methods, he refuses it. Out
  21. of this deadlock springs powerful drama of intramural conspiring
  22. and double-crossing, theft and virtual murder.

  24.   With such implacable people Playwright Hellman has dealt
  25. implacably, exerting against them a moral pressure to match
  26. their own immoral strength. Both the Hubbards and their
  27. playwright-inquisitor work at a pitch too relentless for real
  28. life. But it is the special nature of the theatre to raise
  29. emotions to higher power, somewhat simplifying, somewhat
  30. exaggerating, but tremendously intensifying. Playwright Hellman
  31. makes her plot crouch, coil, dart like a snake; lets her big
  32. scenes turn boldly on melodrama. Melodrama has become a word to
  33. frighten nice-nelly playwrights with; but, beyond its own power
  34. to excite, it can stir up genuine drama of character and will.
  35. Like the dramatists of a hardier day, Lillian Hellman knows
  36. this, capitalizes on it, brilliantly succeeds at it.

  38.   For Tallulah Bankhead -- who, since her return from England
  39. in 1933, has floundered around in uncongenial roles -- The
  40. Little Foxes offers a chance for powerful acting, and she takes
  41. it. She plays the masterful Regina with authority and insight.
  42. Herman Shumlin has directed the play in a style worthy of its
  43. significance and its star.
